STATEMENT

Sydney to Tokyo, 2006, mixed media

created for Solo Match Box Gallery

In Sydney to Tokyo, LED (light emitting diode) lighting is both the subject matter as well as the art object. I draw comparison between two cities through the train system, urban landscape and physical geography. LED lighting technology is presneted as a platform technology synonymous to the development of train technology and its consequent impact on transport.

In this work I show applications of older 1980s styled red LED's powered by solar energy and am raising the question as to whether new generation LED's offer a techno-fix for the increasing market demand for miniaturization, improved lamp life and dynamic effects. In reality, the entire life cycle of the product from manufacture to end of the product needs to be addressed to promote a more sustainable light source.
