Helena Leslie
Helena Leslie is an emerging visual artist based in Sydney. She has graduated from the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Art Theory and a Master of Art Administration.
Her practice can be situated in the field of contemporary drawing and is concerned with exploring notions of trace, memory, systems of archiving, and ways of recording.
Shadow Series 2006 is a series of drawings which attempts to record traces of the self, both multiple and plural. They are miniature and delicate records of moments in time; of potential moments and a future of histories.
Statement by back in 5
My work explores collection and archival processes, as well as ideas linked with memory, shadow, trace and recording. I often work in a series and most often on a small scale. I am currently exploring contemporary drawing practices as a mean of documentation and record keeping, and am interested in working outside the conventional 2 dimensional surface of the paper. I draw some of my imagery from found photographic images, collections of which I am interested in for their connection to the archive, memory and trace.
