My more recent series of artworks focus on the houses of Western Sydney. Since moving to Australia from El Salvador at the age of four, I have lived in the suburbs of Western Sydney and it has been my home for most of my life.
My memories of growing up in Western Sydney and the emotional connection with the area are the motivating factors behind commencing work on this series.
With these artworks, I am interested in capturing more than just the appearance of houses and environments and instead look to explore the visual likeness and capture an emotional engagement with the area. The strong natural elements and dramatic lighting add evocative qualities to the urban landscapes. Feelings of nostalgia and the sublime are the main emotions which I am trying to portray within these landscapes.
Sometimes we can judge an environment by the type of people that we presume inhabit the area. This series of artwork lets the area speak for itself and speak for its inhabitants. To me the suburban landscape evokes a life of its own. With this series of drawings I am attempting to capture an essence of the lives of the people that inhabit these areas. My intention is to represent the mundane and surroundings of Western Sydney suburbs in a more intimate and insightful manner.
