Georgina Rawson, Obelisk landscape, acrylic, oil on canvas 2006

Georgina Rawson
Georgina works primarily in the landscape genre. This work continues Rawson’s emphasis on the Australian sun. The Australian sun is on one hand life giving but on the other hand a Sol Invictus. Drought, bush fires, skin cancer are relaties of the Australian condition and are all connected to the Australian sun. Rawson looks to the past landscape artists
and detournes their idyllic notion of Australia.
This work extends works that Watts began creating in 2004. Responding to the masculine craft of scrimshawing Watts created fake whales teeth and corset busks out of acrylic; these objects were traditional gifts given by sailors to their loved ones in the nineteenth century. Since then Watts has experimented with etched acrylic jewellery, of which this work is like a sampler. The theme of Death and the Maiden is a traditional motif and the baroque nature of the cartouches seems to lend itself to this sort of subject.
