Putting Sydney ARIs on the Map - The Journey ...so far
Solo Match Box Galleries, Installation View, ATVP - detail
In early 2009 we created the Sydney ARI Guide - a printed map and web guide to Sydney's Artist Run Initiatives (ARIs). - These Initiatives include artist run galleries, spaces, projects, publications and events where one can discover upcoming and emerging artists and view cutting edge art works often not seen in commercial galleries and public museums. Visit www.sydneyariguide.com to download an art map, gain insights to Sydney's ARIs and find out when we are next hosting a series of tours through Sydney's major ARI hubs.
To launch the Sydney ARI Guide, (a printed map, web guide and archive project to Sydney's Artist Run Initiatives) we presented a series of three exhibitions - one in each major ARI hub of Sydney. 10 000 art maps introducing Sydney's ARIs were distributed via Avant Card and to ARIs around Sydney. Towards the closing of our exhibitions in each ARI hub, we hosted a series of Free Art Tours for the Public.
The three exhibitions includedYour journey starts here" at Gaffa, Surry Hill and an installation presenting a survey of our work at SLOT, Alexandria/Redfern. Our Exhibition at ATVP, Newtown "The Journey so Far" presented all works created for Match Box Galleries over the past 3 years. Friendship Works (Match Box Gallery Group works) by 72 artists were presented on our Friendship Wall, opposite that of the series of works by Sydney artists created for Solo Match Box Galleries. These Sydney artists were those that inspired us to create the Sydney ARI Guide after discovering most of the ARIS by visiting their exhibitions in same. We realised there was nothing linking these amazing spaces so created the map and guide. For details about each artist/curatorial team and their work go to our artists/curators page here
