A selection of our Encounter......New York Portraits. Each features our New York Time Capsule.
This work entailed capturing New York via the eyes of residents we encountered as they went along their daily lives as we toured the city. Each photograph was taken after the person featured randomly commented on our Time Capsule they are holding. The comments made were very diverse and generally reflected the individuals, the time and often the location we were in. They ranged from "Excuse me, where can I buy that" (Soho) to "I could fit so many lollies in there" (West Village) to "Is that the money left after the crisis?" (Wall St). Everyone was asked a series of questions about their city and have been invited to become collaborators on additional projects we will be creating about New York.
Encounter is being created for a series of long-term public participatory international art projects exploring the identity of diverse cities, their people, places and cultures. We are developing this series to encourage inclusion and wider engagement in the arts, celebrate community and diversity, and break down perceptions/stereotypes of regions and cultures.
