back in 5
Since 2004 back in 5 have been transforming vacant spaces into creative spaces and utilising established artist-run-initiatives for temporary exhibitions and projects. They connect artists and designers from all creative disciplines. Directed by Emily Chan and Sophia Kouyoumdjian, back in 5 is a gallery without a permanent home, aiming to bring new audiences to art and design through unique and unconventional exhibitions.
back in 5 have selected 5 artists for the back in 5 Match Box Gallery, including Mark Brown, Hamilton Darroch, Helena Leslie, Luis Martinez and (late)[ant mrav]. These artists respond to their surrounding environment through a dialogue with site, place or the journey. Through interpretation and new modes of recording, these artists present unique and personal mediations on space and our spatial interactions.
To date the back in 5 Match Box Gallery has toured through Sydney, Brisbane, Osaka, Melbourne, Nagoya, Tokyo and Cowra. Works created for the Gallery have been presented in numerous traditional exhibition spaces including the International Design Museum Nagoya, Gosford Regional Gallery, Gosford, CofaSpace Paddington and the Japan Foundation Gallery, Sydney.
Each artist presented in the back in 5 Match Box Gallery has also created work for a Solo Match Box Gallery and taken part in various exchanges, including the Sydney-Tokyo Geidai Exchange program and various public artists talks held throughout Sydney and surrounds.
